Diagnosing Holden Assignment:

Holden Caulfield is obviously suffering from a psychiatric disorder in the book The Catcher in the Rye.  Using the Gale Group database, you will research FOUR disorders, take brief notes, and decide which disorder Holden is suffering from.  To receive credit for this assignment, you will following the directions below:

Step one: Download the Notes sheet.

Step two: In a new tab, go to the Gale Group database for Psychology - ENTER: montytech1 to access.

Step three:  Look up the Four disorders and answer ONLY the definition/description and causes/symptoms for each.

Step four: Review the Catcher in the Rye Quotations Sheet

Step five:  Based on your notes above and the quotation sheet, decide for yourself a diagnosis for Holden.  On the bottom of the notes sheet, you will type your analysis.  Provide the following:

  • A definition of the disorder.  Start with stating where you found the information.
  • A statement of why you think Holden Caulfield is suffering from this disorder.  Describe the symptoms and explain how it relates to Holden.
  • Type the quotation (or just a part of it) that supports your claim.

Ex.  According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Health, schizophrenia is defined as...       In the book, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield displays symptoms of the disorder by his ....    
Type in at least one quotation from the sheet that supports your claim.  Please edit if needed and at the end, include the (chapter:page).
