Poster Guidelines and Linka

Propaganda: is/was used to spread information to persuade a particular group of individuals and was widely used during WWI.


1.      Choose a country from whose perspective you will create your poster.  (American, British, German, etc.)

2.      Choose one of the following WWI propaganda poster topics:

  • Buying victory bonds
  • Saving/conserving food
  • Joining the army
  • Demonizing the enemy
  • Women and the war effort

Your poster must include:

  • Original work (don’t just print something already made)
  • A clear promotion or element of persuasive propaganda and themes (see below)
  • Color graphics, and artwork
  • A phrase or title to pull in the reader
  • Historical accuracy (content relatable to WWI)

Below are common themes found in propaganda ads. It was/is common for artists to use multiple themes.  For the highest possible grade, include at least three different propaganda themes in your poster. This paper MUST be passed in with your poster.

_____ Bandwagon: Alienating individuals to the point where they feel that they have to agree with the position presented.

_____ Glittering Generalities: Propaganda that is emotionally appealing and people feel a connection with the message and do not question the information being presented.

_____ Plain Folks: Term used to classify everyday people.

_____ Testimonial: Using someone to sway or change another person’s mind.

_____ Card Stacking: To present evidence that is favorable to one side.

_____ Name Calling: To Negatively identify a person or group of individuals.

_____ Dehumanize the Enemy: To make the enemy look like a threat.

_____ Emotional Appeal:

  • Use women and children in your message.
  • Patriotic appeal by using the military to sway people’s opinions.
  • Use of symbols closely related to one’s country (ex. American flag or Uncle Sam.)
